Configure Your Computer to Read E-Mail

ACS-Webmail is the easiest way to read your e-mail. However, if you wish to read your e-mail using programs like Outlook Express or Eudora, here are the steps to get started:

  1. Information Your E-Mail Program Will Need
    • Username
This is the same username as your UCSD Account.
Look it up using Account Lookup Tool
    • E-Mail Address
      This is usually username@ucsd.edu
Look it up using Account Lookup Tool.
    • Password
This is the same password as your UCSD Account.
Reset your password using the Password Change Tool
    • POP3 Server
This is the server available to your account. (e.g. sdcc21.ucsd.edu)
Look it up using Account Lookup Tool
    • On Campus SMTP Server
The SMTP server is: smtp.ucsd.edu *
    • Off Campus SMTP Servers
Some ISPs have blocked access to SMTP servers they do not own. For example, Cox communications has disallowed access to any SMTP server except their own. If you are having problems sending e-mail, and have registered with our SMTP server (See 'Off-Campus Students' below), this is likely the problem. You can find a list of SMTP servers available for each ISP here.
  2. Off-Campus Students
    • Off-campus students should fill out the Off-Campus SMTP Access form.
This will allow you to send e-mail from off-campus.
  3. Configure Your E-Mail Program
    • Armed with this information, you are now ready to configure your e-mail program. We have step-by-step instructions for several popular e-mail programs like Outlook, Entourage, Eudora, Netscape, and MacOS X Mail.
On Oct. 23, 2007, UCSD will change the way outgoing e-mails are sent from off campus. Updated instructions on configuring SMTP.
  4. Troubleshooting
    • If you have trouble connecting, please verify that your username, password, and server information (from step 1) is correct by logging into ACS-Webmail.
